Cut Circle is an excellent American group specializing in repertoire from the turn of the middle ages and the Renaissance, and led by Professor Jesse Rodin at Stanford University. After the recordings of Josquin and Dufay, it was time for Johannes Ockeghem’s chansons. The double album containing 23 songs by Ockeghem and one by Josquin is not only a remarkable testimony to the variety of moods and to the play of music and words one finds in fifteenth-century polyphony, but is also further evidence of vocal artistry and excellent handling of the text—the permanent hallmarks of Cut Circle.
